In the #role-assignment channel of Discord, select the "Northern Reaches" role.
Create a Post in #onboarding-request-nr with your details & indicate if you'd like to join as a Player, GM, or both. An Overlord will respond shortly to get you added to the required systems.
Complete the required survey and click the links within to join the shared Foundry instances via The Forge. You will need to create and login to an account with https://forge-vtt.com/ before this step.
Read the full Player's Guide which will explain the rules for building your character and the campaign. We have some additional rules to make characters more fun such as a free bonus archetype.
If you are a GM and will be running a session, please also read the GM Guide. The "Mechanical Beginner's Guide" section will help you with setting up and preparing for your first session.
Create your character in Pathbuilder (character building tool for Pathfinder 2e) if desired. You may need to purchase the advanced functionality (one-time) to add the 'free archetype'. Feel free to ask for advice in #nr-general for help with building your character or Pathbuilder functionality.
Say hello in the #nr-general channel and request a character sheet from any GM be created in the "Tavern of Last Call" Forge VTT.
If you are new to Foundry, you can watch THIS TUTORIAL to learn about using it as a player.
Log into the "Tavern of Last Call" Forge VTT server and find your character sheet, which you can now fill out. You can request help from any GM if needed to update your character's token and art.
Once your character is completed, feel free to request a review from any GM in #nr-general to ensure you followed all of the character creation guidelines and then Right-click -> "Export" your character from the Actor list on the right side of the window.
Congratulations, you are now ready to play in your first session! Head over to #signups to find a session that fits your availability or request a session at a time that works for you in #lfg.
GMs will specify a voice channel and forge server for the session. At the start of the session, the GM will create placeholder tokens that you can Right-click -> "Import" your character into. You'll also want to "Export" your character again after the session to load into future games or back into the Tavern.
In Northern Reaches, downtime actions happen weekly between sessions via the "In Town" and "Venues" systems. These allow you to do things such as Earn Income, Gather Resources, Craft, and Trade with other players. It also provides an opportunity to Roleplay with other players in-between sessions to earn Roleplay XP. Please check out the Town & Roleplay Guide for more details.
To get started In Town, you will need to create a thread in #player-logs that you will need to update with weekly posts to track which actions you take and with which players. There is a simple template included in #player-logs that you can copy and paste to create your weekly log.
Each week, each player starts with FIVE actions and THREE reactions that they can use to perform actions In Town. In Town Actions has a list of all the actions you can take. Some additional actions may be available at player owned #venues-rp. Venues has a list of all available venue actions, though not all of these may be available depending on player choices.
Earn Income or Resource Expedition at Venues can help you gather the resources or gold that you need for other actions or crafts around town. Once you have some coin, you can make a post in #market for any items you would like to have crafted. Or, if you have the appropriate skills, feats, and formulas, take the Craft action to make the items yourself! Any rolls that you need to make for checks should be made in the #rolls channel or directly in the Venue channel.
There are a variety of tools to make rolls for In-Town Actions; one of the simplest is using DiceParser. Once in the desired channel, such as #rolls, you can enter the following command.
/r d20+<Modifier> # <Description of the Roll>
Example: /r d20+7+1 # Earn Income (Diplomacy) with Aid Bonus vs DC 20
<Modifier> is the one or more static modifiers added to the roll. You can separate multiple bonuses using "+" or "-" signs to apply bonuses or penalties to the roll
<Description of the Roll> is optional text that describes the nature of the roll being made. A good description clearly indicates the purpose of the roll for easier tracking.
If you would like to participate in Roleplay, you will need to create an alias with the NR Bot in the #rp-bot-commands channel. Once in the channel, you can enter the following commands in order.
!addproxy <prefix> <name>
Example: !addproxy Eld Eldrin
<name> should be your character name. <prefix> is the shorthand to indicate to the bot which character you are typing as while in RP enabled channels. You might consider using the first 2-3 letters of the name as your <prefix>. While <prefix> is required for the bot, you only need to enter your <prefix> while chatting if you have multiple aliases defined, otherwise the bot will automatically use your first submitted character.
!setproxyimage <prefix> <imageurl>
Example: !setproxyimage Eld https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/13599306761...
The <prefix> used must match the prefix you set in the !addproxy command. You can use any public web image for the <imageurl>. If needed, you can upload an image you have saved locally to Discord, which will then generate a URL that can be used for the <imageurl>. Upload the image to the channel and then Right-click -> Copy Link the image to paste it into the command.
Once you have an Alias created, you can start earning RP XP. You will earn RP XP automatically with each message that you send in RP Enabled channels such as #tavern-rp, #venues-rp, #scenes-rp, and #lore-and-journals-rp. Some Venue actions such as Complete a Job can grant additional RP XP as a reward. You can also convert your RP XP to Player XP using the Withdraw RP XP action. You can check your balance as well as add or subtract RP XP from your balance in the NR Bot by using the following commands:
!xp
This allows you to check your current RP XP total.
!xp add <number>
Example: !xp add 100
This allows you to add to your RP XP total as you complete In Town actions that grant RP XP.
!xp remove <number>
Example: !xp remove 200
This allows you to remove from your RP XP total as you purchase In Town Perks or use the Withdraw RP XP action.
Congratulations, you are now fully ready to engage In Town and in Roleplay. Feel free to raise any questions in #nr-general on the details of specific actions or the system as a whole.
The Reaches are a living world that is constantly impacted by the stories told by the players. These stories from Sessions or Roleplay can lead to some temporary or permanent impacts on the broader world which are tracked in #events-and-clocks.
In the #events-and-clocks channel you will find a list of any active effects on sessions or In Town activities as well as completed clocks or past events. Your actions In Town and in Sessions can progress these clocks or alter active events. Details on how can be found in each individual post as well as the expected outcomes once they are resolved.
