Players are able to engage with each other in-between adventures in the form of Roleplay in Discord Channels and “In Town” actions. These actions take the place of or provide structure around downtime activities for characters in-between sessions including things such as Earning Income and Retraining. The detailed rules for how to engage in both Roleplay & In Town actions are expanded on below.
Roleplay is encouraged within the Northern Reaches as a great way to engage with both other characters in the campaign as well as explore your own character’s motivations. There is enough mechanical complexity and available progression for player’s to engage in Northern Reaches entirely through Roleplay in Discord if desired while still making a substantial impact on the world.
Roleplaying in the Roleplay Channels you will earn a passive amount of RP XP for each message that you send. This RP XP is SEPARATE from your Player XP and is a pool of XP that can be used to either purchase “Townlife” perks directly or converted to Player XP through the use of certain “In Town” actions to help unlock perks to strengthen your character in adventures. You can also actively earn RP XP by owning or interacting with other player’s venues in the form of completing RP Jobs or other Actions.
Tavern - "The Tavern of Last Call" is the heart of Northport and a great place to meet with other characters as well as enjoy a little rest and relaxation between sessions. This is a common location for Roleplay and can be a great place to discuss active events, recent adventures, character goals, or to simply challenge a friendly rival to a drinking contest.
Scenes - Scenes allows players to participate across a handful of pinned settings such as the "Druidic Glade", "Frostclaim Watchpost", or "Chapel of Many Faiths". Players can also create scenes of their own as needed for any roleplay in other settings outside of Venues. These scenes may be perpetual or represent a particular moment in time. Tags will be used to indicate scenes that are active or concluded.
Venues - Players can choose to unlock Venues for their characters in exchange for XP or RP XP at the Perk Shop. These serve as locations that they control for mechanical and roleplay benefits. Venues can take the form of taverns, spas, magical libraries, mines, crafting shops, etc. Characters will likely visit venues at times to interact with their owners and can use these as opportunities to roleplay. The Venue owner is responsible for setting any rules around their establishment, weekly jobs, as well as describing what their venue looks, smells, and feels like.
RP Job Boards - Job Boards can be used to find RP Jobs from venues that fit your characters skills or attributes. After taking the "Visit a Venue -> Complete a Job" action at the venue that posted the job, you can roleplay with the Venue Owner and any other players partnering on the job to walk through the activities requested and make any required rolls.
Lore & Journals - Players and GMs can keep in character journals of their stories or travels. For a Player, this could take the form of describing a recent adventure that you went on or just providing some backstory around your character. For a GM, this could take the form of a journal from an NPC in adventures that you run or perhaps news bulletins about what has happened in the world based on player actions.
Be kind and respectful to other players during roleplay encounters. Conflict is natural at times in roleplay between characters, but players and their characters should always be treated with a reasonable level of respect.
You control your character. Other players control theirs. As an example, let’s say that two characters were to engage in a wrestling match. You can say that your character moves to grab the other character’s arm, but you shouldn’t describe how the other character reacts as that is up to the other player. Using dice rolls to help determine outcomes is a great way to tie the interaction back to your characters as well.
Yes, and! Collaborate with other players on what is happening in a scene in a way that builds on what has been done and continues to add new elements.
Follow the Community Guidelines. Northern Reaches and the roleplay between sessions are taking place as part of the broader Knights of Last Call Community and follow the same community guidelines as the rest of the server. To be clear, this means no sexual content or overly gratuitous violence along with other community rules.
No spamming. Chatting in common roleplay channels or your venues will reward a passive amount of RP XP, though each message you send should be thoughtful, meaningful, and tied to your character. That doesn’t mean it needs to be long. Make messages as long or short as they need to be to convey what you want, but try to focus on setting scenes and interactions between characters.
Use your own words. While chatGPT and similar tools can at times help to provide some inspiration to a message you are working on sending, you cannot simply copy and paste messages from AI tools like chatGPT. Use your own words and only as many as needed to convey your vision.
((Out of Character)). You can use (( )) symbols to surround any out of character conversation needed to align on a scene or next steps between players. This could be used to discuss the rules for a roll on a contest or simply to make sure that players are on the same page about where a scene is headed.
Players start with a total of FIVE “In Town” Actions / week as well as THREE "In Town" Reactions / week. Players do NOT start with Hero Points for “In Town” actions, though they can unlock them via Perks or gained through Town Blessings. These actions and Hero Points are shared between all character slots a player possesses. Players cannot use Fortune effects other than these Hero points to alter their rolls for In Town actions, though any skill bonuses that are applicable can be used.
Any social “In Town” action that would be an interaction between players requires only one player to spend the action unless otherwise stated and also allows the players to exchange gold or resources as needed. The Trade action is required to exchange any items. Any rolls for “In Town” actions should be made in Discord in the #rolls channel or directly in the associated scene or venue channel.
Your character may have other unique passives, actions, or activities available via class or skill feats. If any of these feats reference the Craft action, they will use the rules listed for the Craft action here instead for determining costs and limitations.
You must check for or request rulings from #council-hall on how these feats interact with downtime in Northern Reaches before using them. An example of this is the Inventor skill feat which would allow a player to spend an "In Town" action to try to invent a new formula.
Please see the In Town Actions for more details on the individual actions available.
There are also unique actions available for each venue depending on what venues players create, so be sure to check those as well at Venues!
Venues are customizable locations that are player managed for Roleplay and downtime support. Players can choose to purchase a Venue with their Player XP or RP XP by purchasing the “Setting Up Shop” Perk. Afterwards, the Venue can be further customized and improved with additional Perks.
When initially creating a Venue players will be able to choose ONE Passive and ONE Action from the list of available options further below. There are lots of unique combinations of Passive and Actions available to help you create your ideal venue. If an Action selected for your Venue requires you to make a decision of available sub-options, those decisions are made only once when you first gain the Action. Additionally, all Venues come with the “Complete a Job” action, for which the Venue owner can set RP Jobs to be completed when they first open their venue for the week.
“Opening a Venue” requires an action each week, but when activated provides unique passive perks that can help the owner or any visiting players as well as allowing them to take an Action available from their Venue. While your Venue is Open, you can take Actions available at your venue as desired, ignoring any frequency limitations they may have for Visitors. As the Venue owner, you NEVER count as a visitor to your venue, no matter how many actions you take at your Venue in a week.
When you Open a Venue for the week, you should update the tags for the Venue with the "Open" tag. You can choose to keep your Venue open the following week by applying the "Open Next Week" tag as well, which will ensure the Venue is automatically marked as "Open" the following week but also commits you to using the "Open a Venue" at some point during that week.
When opening your venue, you may post up to THREE jobs to be completed in the #jobs-board-rp channel. You decide on the tasks, eligible skills, and minimum participants for each job. (Please see the "Complete a Job" Venue Action for more details.)
Players can interact with an open venue by taking the “Visit a Venue” action which allows them to either:
- Perform an action available at the target venue.
OR
- Perform a social action that involves the owner of target venue such as to Trade or Challenge to a Contest.
Venue owners can always decide which Venue Actions are available only to themselves or to visitors at their Venue. They may also decide to impose fees or requirements on visitors at their venue as desired.
Resources can be found through the use of various In Town actions or while out on Adventures and can be used for Crafting or to cover the expense of various In Town actions.
Materials in the Reaches can be "Limited" so crafting with high quality Resources can be an advantage. Resources can be used to cover 1.5x their value in common material cost while crafting or while taking In Town actions. Resources can be combined with gold for a single craft or In Town action to cover the expense as needed. As an example, if you were crafting an item worth 100g, you could cover the expense with 50g worth of Resources (75g in value for the craft) and 25g in coin (to purchase the remaining materials).
Resources can be used for specific types of Specialty Crafting detailed in the list below. If multiple entries apply such as Bookmaking in Herbs and Scrolls (Vellum) in Furs, then either material can be used to make the item which in this example would be Scrolls.
Mining (Minerals) - Artistry, Blacksmithing, Engineering, Runecrafting
Foraging (Herbs) - Alchemy, Body Art, Magicworks, Runecrafting, Woodworking
Hunting (Furs) - Artistry, Alchemy, Body Art, Clothing, Magicworks
As a Venue owner, you are eligible to submit a special type of Quest to the Quest Board to enlist adventures to help with the needs of your Venue such as to deal with a potential threat, drum up new business opportunities, or to perhaps find a new exotic ingredient to help pull together a potion you have been working on. These are referred to as Venue Quests. As a Venue Owner, you are able to have up to TWO active Quest Board posts active at any given time of your choice of either Personal Quests or Venue Quests.
You as a player are ineligible to participate in a your own Venue Quests, though you can participate in any other posted quest on the board.
If your quest is accepted by a GM and completed successfully by a minimum team of three players in a session of at least 2+ hours in length, you receive your choice of one of the following benefits (depending on what the quest entailed). No matter your choice, you CANNOT receive a reward for completed Venue Quests more than TWICE A WEEK.
Materials - You receive 50% of a TP worth of a specific type of Resources.
Efficiency - You receive an additional In Town action for the week.
Fame - You receive 100 RP XP.
For more information on the Quest Board system, please see this section of the Player's Guide.
There are a variety of tools to make rolls for In-Town Actions; one of the simplest is using DiceParser. Once in the desired channel, such as #rolls, you can enter the following commands.
/r d20+<Modifier> # <Description of the Roll>
Example: /r d20+7+1 # Earn Income (Diplomacy) with Aid Bonus vs DC 20
<Modifier> is the one or more static modifiers added to the roll. You can separate multiple bonuses using "+" or "-" signs to apply bonuses or penalties to the roll
<Description of the Roll> is optional text that describes the nature of the roll being made. A good description clearly indicates the purpose of the roll for easier tracking.
If you need to roll with a fortune effect, such as using a perk upgraded In-Town Hero Point, modify the roll as below:
Example: /r 2d20k1+7+1 # Earn Income (Diplomacy) using upgraded Hero Point vs DC 20
If you would like to participate in Roleplay, you will need to create an alias with the NR Bot in the #rp-bot-commands channel. This bot automatically tracks your RP XP total and replaces messages that you type with an in character alias. Below is a list of commands that you can use to interact with the bot. If you would like a message to be excluded from the bot such as ones not intended to be in chracter, you can indicate it is OOC (out of character) by using (( )) symbols.
!addproxy <prefix> <name>
Example: !addproxy Eld Eldrin
This command adds an alias to the NR Bot. <name> should be your character name. <prefix> is the shorthand to indicate to the bot which character you are typing as while in RP enabled channels. You might consider using the first 2-3 letters of the name as your <prefix>. While <prefix> is required for the bot, you only need to enter your <prefix> while chatting if you have multiple aliases defined, otherwise the bot will automatically use your first submitted character.
!setproxyimage <prefix> <imageurl>
Example: !setproxyimage Eld https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/13599306761...
This command adds an image to your alias in the NR Bot. The <prefix> used must match the prefix you set in the !addproxy command. You can use any public web image for the <imageurl>. If needed, you can upload an image you have saved locally to Discord, which will then generate a URL that can be used for the <imageurl>. Upload the image to the channel and then Right-click -> Copy Link the image to paste it into the command.
!removeproxy <prefix or name>
Example: !removeproxy Eld
This command allows you to remove a character. The <prefix or name> should match the name or prefix of a character alias that you no longer need such as one you have retired or who may have met an untimely end.
!xp
Example: !xp
This command allows you to check your current RP XP total.
!xp add <number>
Example: !xp add 100
This command allows you to add to your RP XP total as you complete In Town actions that grant RP XP.
!xp remove <number>
Example: !xp remove 200
This command allows you to remove from your RP XP total as you purchase In Town Perks or use the Withdraw RP XP action.
